Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Could Be The Reason For Having Fever And Pink Swollen Gums?
I have a 16 month old daughter and she has had fever of up to 103 and then it goes down but even though the fever goes down she keeps crying and complaining as if she has a infection. she has been drooling a lot. she hardly wants to drink her bottle milk or pedialite ( we still get her to drink it after). we went to our local hospital and the doctor seemed as if she didn't really care. she said everything was fine. that the tong soles are not swollen and that the ears seem fine. they prescribed Tylenol. we have been giving her Tylenol and it does not seem to be helping. we tried motrin and had same effect. I checked to see if shes teething, but I don't see any new teeth or her gums swollen or pink.
The most common pediatric diagnosis is a "Viral Illness". This may be the case here, even in light of the extreme symptoms. The swollen gums could still be teething, though the fever is a bit high. It is very possible that on initial exam at the hospital nothing else of significance was found. However, exams can change with time. I suggest that if the fever has persisted for 48 hours or more since the first exam, or you are concerned about dehydration, your daughter should be re-examined.
