What Does ECG Showing Sinus Rhythm With Mild Aortic Cusp Sclerosis Mean?

Q: I did an echocardiograph and the report says"rest ECG shows sinus rhythm. mild aortic cusp sclerosis is present. Left ventricular chamber size is normal. Mild septal thickening. There is trace tricuspid regurgitation present. I do not understand the interpretation of this; can you please explain for me. Thank you. Lara

Normal sinus rhythm is the normal heart rate and rhythm observed during the echocardiography. Aortic valve is an important valve in the heart that transmits blood that is pumped out of the heart and into the aorta to be supplied to the rest of the body. The aortic valve is made up of leaflets or cusps and in your heart these cusps are showing sclerosis or aging changes which can be expected at an elderly age. This is an observation and not a reason to worry as other parameters are normal. The left ventricle is normal in appearance and the mild septal thickening is an age related normal finding. There are also valve between heart chambers and on the right side there is the tricuspid valve. In your tricuspid valve there is minimal backflow and this is not a problem at your age.
