What Does High Levels Of Fasting Blood Glucose Suggest?
Age 33 - 5 6 and weight 75. No medical history of diabetes. i have done my blood tests and found my glucose fasting plasma to be high (131 mg/dL). i havent done postprandial glucose check.. so is this reading correct or after the pp only a correct diagnosis can be made?
Dear Sir/Madam, Good that you have checked your sugars. I believe you have checked sugars using glucometer. Fasting value more than 125mg/dl is Diabetes.
Now i have a few points for you.. First and foremost the diagnosis of diabetes is not to be done with glucometer readings. The reason is that there is a 10-15% difference in reading between plasma and blood glucose. In a patient like you it can make a big difference in diagnosis. So the blood test for diagnosis should only be done in a good quality lab. Secondly glucometers need calibration once in 6months . if not there is a high chance that it can show faulty readings. Second major point is that for a good and certain diagnosis it is always better to go for a GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test). This will tell you the stage of diabetes ( Diabetes or prediabetes) The advantage is that we might be able to tell you the chances of developing diabetes in the near future. So please do a GTT and confirm your diagnosis. All the best! Dr.Riyaz Sheriff
