What Does Mildly Prominent Renal Pelvis In Fetal Kidney Mean?

I am 25 yrs of age. My LMP was on 28th January 2011.I had my first Ultrasound done on 09.06.2011 which stated Both Kidneys shows mildly prominent pelvis (Right 6 mm in AP and left 5mm in AP dimensions)Urinary bladder seen normally . And advised for a follow up scan for renal status. I underwent a second ultrasound on 22.07.2011. Which again stated Fetal kidney shows mildly prominent renal pelvis (Right kidney 7.9mm in AP diameter and left kidney 5.8mm in AP diameter).... We are very worried about this.. Kindly tell me what does it mean and what may be the probable treatment...Waiting for a reply.... My mail ID is YYYY@YYYY

Hello.
Thank you for contacting HCM.

I have seem many patients with more or less similar ultrasound findings in many pregnant ladies. The most likely possibility is that this is a normal variant of normal kidney tissue. it is known as Extra Renal Pelvis in whichsome part of the renal pelvis outside of renal tissue.
However, there is possibilities of Obstructive cause which is known as PUJ ( Pelvi ureteric obstruction). It is difficult to differentiate between these two conditions in early pregnancy. Follow up ultrasound in third trimester and after delivery( ultrasound of the baby) need to be done.
If PUJ Obstruction is confirmed at follow up ultrasounds...then i would suggest u consult a neonatologist.....even in that case....it is treatable.

I hope this answers your query.
Please feel free to contact HCM if you have any concerns.
Wishing you and your baby good health.
