You should see a nephrologist asap if this results is “only” from a GP. Hydronephrosis, in your case unilateral (only on one side) is a swelling of the kidney. Different conditions can cause that. So, naturally treatment for hydronephrosis depends on the underlying cause. Sometime surgery is necessary, but most often the condition resolves on its own. If it’s only a low grade hydronephrosis, the nephrologist may decide to take a wait-and-see approach. However, he may recommend preventive antibiotic therapy or other medications to lower the risk of urinary tract infections.
Cases of severe hydronephrosis make it hard for the kidney to function properly. Surgery may be recommended because severe hydronephrosis can lead to permanent kidney damage or even kidney failure. But since hydronephrosis typically affects only one kidney, like in your case, you don’t need to panic. Even with one kidney you can get 100 years old. So, please stop being anxious, see a local nephrologist asap and all will be fine soon. Don’t wait!
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
