Hello. I have had a mole on my left cheek bone for as long as I can remember. Over time it has leaked a little puss and I just put it down to a spot. But in the last month the mole has swollen a lot and it feels like a spongey ball and it is really painful to touch. Please advise. I am a 34 year old male. Non smoker non drinker.
A mole sometimes can be inflamed and raised, sometimes it can be infected due to recurrent rubbing like a habit of rubbing the area or during act of shaving. Many a times, pus starts to ooze out of this, known as spitz nevus mole. Though spitz nevus mole are usually benign but to differentiate it from melanoma, biopsy is usually needed.
Usually benign mole has even surface, smooth margins and single shade of brown color, Where as melanoma has uneven raised surface, uneven or ragged margins and usually of multicolor in appearance like black, brown red or blue shades in the same lesion. However, if there is even a slightly likelihood of presence of melanoma, then it should be immediately confirmed/ruled out by a biopsy.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
