Hello, Your mother has a kidney complication of diabetes. The presence of protein in the urine is due to that. Such people often have eye involvement also. The reason why she becomes unconscious is because she is developing low sugar ( hypoglycemia unawareness). You should check her kidney function with a 24 hr urine test called creatinine clearance. Depending on that her medicines may require a change. There are some medicines which may decrease the worsening of protein in the urine. You could discuss these points with her doctor . Many of my patients have better quality of life with these measures. You are welcome to contact me if you need my opinion in the future. Dr. Noble Zachariah M.D
