What Does The MRI Scan With Bilateral Minimal Joint Effusion Indicate?
I need an advice on my MRI report.
June 1, 2010 MRI of both knees: The study was performed on a 1.5 Tesla super conducting system with a 30mT/min gradient with knee coil.
Technique: 1. sagittal PD, MW & T2 WIs 2. coronal T1 & T2* WIs 3. Axial T2* WIs
Findings: • The posterior horns of the medial menisci on either sides show degenerative changes with intrasubstance bright signals on PD WIs not reaching articular surfaces (blue tags). • Intact anterior and posterior cruciate as well as medial and lateral collateral ligaments on both knees. • Intact osseous structures of the knee joints wit normal MR signal intensities of their bone marrow. • Normal appearance of the quadriceps tendons and patellar ligaments. • Normal periarticular soft tissue structures. • Bilateral minimal joint effusion.
Opinion: • Bilateral degenerative changes at the posterior horns of medial menisci. • Bilateral minimal joint effusion.
The meniscus is a “c”-shaped cartilage disk that’s found in the knee. We have two menisci in either knee. We have the medial meniscus on the inner side of the knee and the lateral meniscus on the outer side of the knee. The menisci contribute to a healthy knee because they play important roles in joint stability, force transmission, and lubrication. Your MRI scan knee shows degenerative changes in the medial menisci of both knees.
Along with this there is small amount of fluid collection in the knee joint on both sides. Your condition is not a serious one but you may not involve yourself in heavy physical activitites.
