What Does The Finding Of MRI Mean?

Hi, I need help deciphering my MRI. It says....left paracentral disc protrusion distorting the left anterior aspect of the thecal sac and contacting the S1 nerve root in the lateral recess of the spinal canal in the left. Disc desiccation at L5/S1. Loss of the normal lumbar lordosis. I'm a female aged 34. Thank you.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us

According to MRI report you have degenerative disc disease of lumbar spine.
Degenerative changes occurs in spine due to aging and development of weakness in annulus fibrosis which allows herniation of disc.

1.At L5-S1 level there is left para central disc herniation causing distortion of left anterior aspect of the thecal sac and it is in contact with S1 nerve root in the lateral recess in left side.
There is also loss of water from disc at this level.
There is loss of lumbar lordosis.

Treatment for degenerative lumbar disease includes physiotherapy or surgery.
Effectiveness of both modalities are same. So,physiotherpay should be tried first. It causes strengthening of Para spinal muscles and it prevents further changes.
Surgery should be the last option.
There are also medicines like capsule pregabalin available for pain relief.
Treatment can be planned after consultation with neurosurgeon.
Get well soon.

Take Care
