Is it possible to tell the difference between calcium and a foreign body on a CT scan? on an MRI? My MRI says susceptibility the CT says punctate hyperdense focus (could represent focus of calcium or a foreign body)...what does this mean?
1.MRI is not good in presence of foreign body - as it may give artefact ( reflections ) and even in case of calcium MRI is not a recommended modality. 2.CT is good to differentiated from a calcium and a foreign body, As hyper dense foci in case of calcium ( the difference is made with HU values) 3.X-ray will be best to differentiate initially cheap and less radiation. 4.Foreign body is seen as radio dense opacity on x-ray. 5.Depending on the size and location of object - X-ray and CT will be best. Good luck.
