My 17yr old son was seen in urgent care yesterday & was diagnosed with Mono. The doctor that saw him noticed that his uvula was hanging to the left. He told me to keep an eye on it & if some of his symptoms changed (fever, increased swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing or difficulty swallowing) that he needed to be brought to the ER immediately & that they would do a Cat Scan. Why would he need this? What does it mean if his uvula hangs to the left?
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of uvula handing to left which means you have symptoms of inflammatory hyperplasia of tonsils which are pointing towards a condition known as granular pharyngitis. It could be due to gastro esophageal Reflux of gastric acid and post nasal drip . I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles , avoid hot and spicy food. Saline nasal spray can help in thinning the mucous and help in easy draining. You should avoid smoking and drinking and consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and rule out causes like uvulitis . Doctor may order certain test and may prescribe antibiotics ( amoxicillin ) at least for 10 days along with anti inflammatory .
