What Is The Cause Of Slow Weight Gain In A New Born ?

Dear Doctor, I am 24 yr old my first baby was born by cesarean delivery due to high BP on 9th month of my pregnancy period. Baby weighs 3.1 kg on birth with good health, on 6th day my baby has a mild jaundice and it was treated by phototherapy for 3 days which gets to normal after the treatment baby weighs 2.75 kg on 8th day. Then I am feeding my baby regularly but i dont know whether he is getting enough milk. His urination is 6 to 7 times per day and motion is 3 to 4 days a time only and he wont sleep well & always crying. He gets hiccups 4 times a day. But he is very active. After 40 days, my baby weighs 2.85 kg. While consulting with a local pediatrician she says my breast milk was good and sufficient but the baby is in low weight, hence she prescribes us to provide “Dexolac Special Care” alternatively with breast milk . If this is not increasing my baby’s weight in one week time then she suggests us to full check up the baby for metabolism. By giving “Dexolac Special Care” feeding, my baby sleeps well and the urination is also fine. For your reference please find some more details below: Last Menstrual Period: 16th May 2011 Expected Due Date: 23rd Feb 2012 Baby Born Date: 02nd Feb 2012 (Baby Wt. 3.1 Kg) Mild Jaundice found on baby: 06th Feb 2012 Under Phototherapy till: 10th Feb 2012 (Baby Wt. 2.7 Kg) BCG Vaccination: 13th Feb 2012 (Baby Wt. 2.8kg) Omnivit Drops (Multi Vit) given from: 19th Feb 2012 Last weighed: 12th Mar 2012 (Baby Wt. 2.9 Kg) DexoLac Feeds from: 12th March 2012 Please explain me what’s going on with my baby? Why his weight is not getting increase as normal? What are all I need to do for my baby’s good health? Kindly advice me as soon as possible..

Hi
Welcome to HCM
First of all thanks for give details of your problem.Your baby was born with normal body weight and losing weight in first 2 week is normal. After 2week weight should be increased gradually if feeding and general condition is good.As per your details the baby was active and was passing urine 6-7 times a day indicating sufficient milk. There is nothing alternative of mother's milk and by no means formula feeding can be advised(it is very unfortunate). As per the growth chart the pattern of growth is not normal after 40 days.I think formula milk should be stopped and exclusive breast feeding to be given up to six month of age.The possibility of some underling diseases can be excluded by a pediatrician. So I would request you to visit your pediatrician again.
Thanking you.

Dear Rohini

You posted this question on 16-3-2012. I would like to know the baby's current weight. I agree that the baby has not gained weight as a normal infant should do( 20-30 gms. per day during first 3 months) If he is still under weight he should be investigated for a chronic infection like Urinary tract, intestinal infection etc. Does he have a normal body temperature?

Please furnish the asked for information on my email address: drjayc48@gmail.com so that I may be able to render any further help.

Good luck.
