My son in law has been diagnosed with stge 3 stomach cancer. He was very overweight and has lost 150 pounds. He began chemo 3 weeks ago and was admitted to the hospital a couple of days ago because he cannot eat anything and is vomitting constantly and has diarehha to boot. Is this the sign of the end for him?
Diarrhea and constipation can be a complication of chemotherapy. Drugs used for treatment of stomach cancer cause mucositis (inflamed inner lining of entire gut) with resultant diarrhea, vomiting and superimposed bacterial infections. Neutropenia (low neutrophil count; associated with chemotherapy can further worsen the infections. These conditions require aggressive treatment. Please discuss it with your treating oncologist.
