What Is The Effect Of Increase Of Blood Sugar Level On Health?
My husband just did his three month blood sugar test and it came back at 9.9, his last three month test was 8. He said that they are going to increase his night injection of insulin but that it's 'no big deal' - he is type 2, insulin dependent x 4 years, no lifestyle changes and does not modify food choices at all. Please tell me about the damage this is causing so I know what to expect.
Hello there, I can understand your concern regarding your husband's health. His sugars for the last three months have been quite high. High blood sugars do cause a lot of complications, the very reason why we treat diabetes. It can cause eye damage (cataracts, retinopathy) kidney damage, damage to the nerves which may lead to ulcers and infection in the foot, non healing of any wound in the body, frequent urinary or respiratory infections, increases the risk of heart problems. Now this is not an exhaustive list and there are many other problems that uncontrolled diabetes that can lead to. Moreover when sugars suddenly rise to very high levels (400-500) then it may lead to dehydration and even coma. So there is a definite need to control sugars and change his eating and lifestyle pattern. I know that he has not been doing it but talk to your physician about trying different ways to convince your husband. Medicines and insulin will not help alone. Till then from your end try to reduce the carbohydrate content of meals for him. Keep him well hydrated at all times. Keep motivating him to do some exercise. Hope this helps. Take care.
