What Is The Equivalent Dosage Of Lantus To The Humalog Insulin?
Hi Dr. Grief. My son and I are going on vacation. He is a Type I diabetic that averages about 60 units of Humalog a day by using a pump. We are going to the beach and we use can use Lantus insulin since he has his pump off for most of the day. Is there a typical dose of Lantus he can take for the amount of Humalog insulin he takes to cover him for 8 hours?

HI
Thanks for posting your query .
See let me first tell you the difference between Humalog and LAnctus .
Humalog contains Lispro which is a short acting Insulin which can be given through out the day as basal Infusion through Pump and Bolus injection immediate pre or post meals .
But Lanctus is a long acting Insulin which acts for almost 24 hours .
So the problem with Lanctus is it will control the basal blood sugar levels and not the Post prandial ( that is after meals ) blood sugars . So it's not rational to replace Humalog to Lanctus .
What you can do instead is use either 3 shots of Injectable Short acting Insulin like Humalog or 2 shots of Pre-mixed Insulin before his Breakfast and Dinner .
If you are going for 3 shots of Short acting Insulin like Humalog then you can give 18-22-18 units before his Breakfast , lunch and dinner respectively . But if you are going for 2 shots of Pre-mixed Insulin then you can give 25-0-15 units before his Breakfast and Dinner .
