What Is The Hard Lump On The Rib Cage After An Injury?

Hi. I strained a muscle in my ribs two weeks ago. I went to the emergency room the day it happened. They took x-ray and said its not broken. at the time it happened I felt a pop and noticed a small lump. I do feel alot better but far from perfect. The lump is still there and it still bothers me. I have been feeling the same results for the past 5 days like its not getting any better. Its a really hard lump. Can it be torn so badly that I will need surgery to repair? I am going to get an mri next week. What will the mri show?

General Surgeon 's  Response
hi.

based from your description, it could possibly be a fibrotic reaction secondary to the trauma you had. it's like scarring process of your tissue, only on the inside. a consult with a doctor is best for clinical evaluation. diagnostics such as x-ray, mri, will help rule-out the presence of fractures, soft tissue swelling or mass. management (medical and/or surgical) will be directed accordingly.

hope this helps.

good day!!
