My biopsy results for my thyroid nodule came back as non diagnostic via the Bathesda system. According to the report the specimen consisted of follicular epithelial and Hurthle cells along with macrophages. The report concluded that the material present favor a benign follicular process Even though there is insufficient material for diagnosis. What does this mean? Do i have an increased chance for developing thyroid cancer because of the presence of the Hurthle cells? Im confused..
hi..welcome to HC magic... follicular epithelial cells are normal thyroid cells. your report tells that there is inflammation in the thyroid. Hurthle cells are degenerated thyroid cells. macrophages suggests that there is inflammation. As such, there is no risk for thyroid cancer. get thyroid profile done. you can also get an ultrasound thyroid done for further confirmatiion. hope this helped.
