what does the following mean...At L5-S1 there severe face joint changes and diffuse disc ridge complex: with a small disc herniation . there is narrowing of the right neural foramen with definite nere root compression. .there are moderate facet joint changes and centra and left posterolateral bulge @L4-5 with a possible slight mass effect on the left L5 nerve root..( ALL OF THIS FROM A RECENT MRI FOR LOW BACK PAIN WITH RADIATION INTO BOTH BUTTOCKS WITH POSTERIOR LEFT THIGH PAIN TO THE KNEE) .....
There is degeneration of lumbar spine disc between L 5 and S 1 and L4 - L 5 levels. This is resulting in the disc herniating between the bones. The nerve roots pass through these neural foramina and you might have severe nerve root compression at that level and at level L 4 - L 5 the pain is more to the left. The nerve pain may be controlled with restricted physical activity and pain relief medication. Please do not do heavy physical activity till you are comfortable. If the pain persists in spite of restricted physical activity and proper pain relief medications for few months then surgical treatment can be thought of. Laser assisted surgery is becoming popular in this area.
