What Is The Reason For Change In Nature Of Periods At The Age Of 51?

I am 51 years old. The last year my periods have become light and unreliable. The last three monts they have been light and last about three weeks. Then one week off. The last one was normal then three weeks off now a light period again going on for two weeks. What could this be?

Hi. Welcome to HCM. U r in your perimenopausal age and irregular periods are common in this period. Perimenopause lasts up until menopause, the point when the ovaries stop releasing eggs. The average length of perimenopause is four years, but for some women this stage may last only a few months or continue for 10 years. Hot flashes,Breast tenderness,Worsening of premenstrual syndrome,Decreased libido (sex drive),Fatigue,Irregular periods,Vaginal dryness,mood swings. Based on your symptoms and also some tests your doctor will diagnose this. If this is very troublesome to u then consult a doctor he/she may prescribe hormone therapy after thorough examination. Dont panic as most women in your age will go through this. Regards.
