What Is The Reason For Vomiting Brown Stuff And Elevated Blood Pressure In A 85 Year Old Suffering From Psoriatic Arthritis?

Hi I have an 85 grandmother who started throwing up brown stuff tonight. She hurt badly yesterday under her left breast with abdominal swelling. She has been eating lots of candy today and lots of holiday food. This morning she complained of right shoulder pain. She has psoratic arthritis all over her body. Tonight the throwing up was sudden onset and her blood pressure was 164/65.

Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

If I were your doctor, considering her age, I would advise you to take her to the emergency room of the nearest hospital at the earliest. Because of her medications for the psoriatic arthritis, and the high blood pressure, she might have developed ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, which could have bled causing the brownish discoloration of the vomitus. The heavy food might have precipitated it. For the immediate purpose, I would give her a prokinetic and proton pump inhibitor drug till furhter investigations are done.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
