Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Medication Is Suggested For Vitamin D Deficiency?
I have DYSPHAGIA, problem in swallowing food since last two years. I lost 25-30 kg weight during the year. Nothing could be diagnosis even after going a series of investigations of (1) CT Scan of upper part of chest & neck (2) Barium Swallow showed Narrowing in Oesophagus (3) Endoscopy, nothing significant finding in the oesphagus (4) Biopsy, Nothing seriou finding, medical solution suggested. (5) All blood investigation normal except Vit D deficiency.
Hello, welcome to HCM. Your question is about vitamin D and what to take to avoid deficiency. Since you are already deficient, I would attempt repletion by taking 5,000IU Vitamin D3 for 3 months. Then drop down to 1,000 IU per day as a usual daily regimen. Vitamin D is obtained through absorption from the sun. Then in the body it is turned into an active hormone. So, sunlight and vitamin A/D fortified milk are the primary sources. Still, 90% of the population does not get enough of this "vitamin". Absorption from the sun is limited by skin color; the darker the skin, the less absorption. Also, location from the equator is important with regards to absorption. Vitamin D comes in drops if necessary due to your dysphagia. Thank you for visiting. Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
