What Should Be Done After A Horsefly Bite?

We went up north on vacation, my older son Brandon got bit by a horsefly,my husband tried sucking out the area where he got bit. We applied ice/calamine lotion. Its been a few days, the area is slightly red, the itching is not as bad now.Is there anything we need to be concerned about? any disease it could spread?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
Horsreflies are stout flies measuring 10-25 mm in length and species is TABANUS .
In UNITED STATES it can cause tularemia , while in AFRICA it causes loiasis .
Treatment includes , antipruritic agents ( like calamine lotion or clotrimazole loti on ) , glucocorticoids ( dexamethasone or prednisolone ) antispetic lotion relieve the itching and pain.
If redness present give your son fexofnadine 120- 180 mg tablets once or twice in day till complete cure .
If you suspect that there is infection ( below red area) then you may need antibiotics for 1-2 days .
Hope this information will be helpful for you.
