What Should Be Done For 101.4 Fever And When Should A Doctor Be Consulted?

My 25 year old son who is never sick has a fever of 101.4. No other symptoms except some slight sinus discomfort. Had his flu shot over a month ago. I'm thinking virus, but not sure about the fever. Tylenol and fluids? At what temp should we consider the doctor?

Hi there. My name is Vinay. Let me see if I can help you make an informed decision when it comes to taking your son to the doctor.

First off. I'm glad to hear that your son rarely gets sick.. Good immune system, by the sound of it. A healthy diet, exercise and regular checkups can keep that going for the rest of his life.

Now when it comes to the current fever. 101.4 is definitely a fever and from what you have described.. A sinus infection could be the cause of it. That infection could be a sign of a generalized Upper respiratory tract infection and it could also progress to a cough and a lung infection so we need to keep an eye on it.

In the more developed parts of the world with good sanitation and drinking water it IS generally safe to assume that any infection like this is probably viral at first.. In which case antibiotics won't help and pain meds, fever meds and some good 'ol TLC is about all that he should need. The body is the best thing we know of when combating viruses.

If the fever and symptoms worsen over the next 5 days or last longer than 7.. then I would take him to your primary and see about getting tested for a bacterial infection. Those critters respond well to Antibiotics and when taken correctly can be counted on to help.

There is a small caveat here. If your son develops a sore throat.. i would really like it if you could take him to a clinic or to your Primary and get a Rapid Strep Test done. He's not too old to get them and they can play havoc later on. So I'd rather test for them and treat them sooner rather than later.

Well I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me through HCM if you think I can be of any more assistance.

Thanks,

Vin
