Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Should I Say About Perineal Mass While Getting A Colonoscopy?
I recently experienced severe pain in the perineum. A large subcutaneous mass (approximately 5 mm by 10mm) was visible. Very tender and constantly painful. This pain increased until last night a discharge which I believe was from the mass began to ooze. This discharge is extremely foul smelling and while it contains blood certainly smells fecal (or even worse). I am due to have a colonoscopy in 2 days. What should I say to the gastroenterologist?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history of a mass at anus which got ruptured with blood tinged very foul smelling discharge. You have a Colonoscopy scheduled after 2 days. This looks to be a small peri-anal abscess which might have drained inadequately. Hence I would advise you the following: Go to ER and try to get the opinion of a General Surgeon to evaluate whether you need lancing and proper drainage or can go ahead with Colonoscopy after 2 days. Also to get a proper antibiotic cover and dressing. If Colonoscopy is possible get it done, if not possible get appointment rescheduled.
