I am very confused. For several months, my primary doctor has been watching the calcium levels in my blood and recently referred me to an endocrinologist. I had a test for growth on my thyroid and nothing was found. I am now scheduled for several tests---blood work, bone density, etc. with the possibility of surgery. Basically, I was told we ll discuss this after the test results. What is it that would make surgery necessary? How serious is this surgery? What can I expect afterwards? (I am 62 years old.)
Thank you for your question on HCM. In my opinion the doctors are suspecting malignancy of thyroid. In thyroid malignancy calcium level tend to raise due to high PTH. So they might be thinking of malignant thyroid nodule and sent tumour markers and calcuim level. In my opinion follow your doctors advice and get done blood test and discuss with them.
