What To Do For Tenderness And Discomfort At Lymph Incision Which Is Above Hematoma?

Hi dr

I have a hematoma the developed 1 wk ago after lumpectomy and 2 nodes removed for stage 1 idc on1/16/2014. I am hoping my pain will improve by the time I go back to work on 2/1. The hematoma was and is quite painful much more so than the first few days after surgery. They were a breeze. I saw my surgeon as scheduled the day after the the symptoms do the hematoma were noted and he diagnosed it and told me to expecte discoloration. These have come to pass but the discomfort especially at the lymph incision (which is above the hematoma is quite tender. No sign of infection tho. I am wondering if I will be able to tolerate work by Saturday and if should see my dr again. (he said he did not need to see me for 8 wks)

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

It is always a possibility that the hematoma of the lymph collection might get infected, which could be known by physical examination at regular intervals, and a history of fever. If this is excluded, then the pain in the line of incision would gradually pass off, and might take some time to resolve. If there is no active ooze, the hematoma would also resolve if there is no infection. So you have to patiently observe on these points and if the symptoms increase more than what you have now, I would advise you to consult your surgeon again.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in planning your treatment. Thanks for using the health care magic forum for your query on health. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
