When Should I Stop Taking Xarelto Before Colonoscopy?
How long in advance of a colonoscopy should I stop taking Xarelto? My cardiologist says one evening before, but I don t want to take a chance of having to repeat the colonoscopy. The doctor performing the procedure says to follow my cardiologist s instructions.
Hello, welcome to Healthcaremadic. Xarelto is a brand name of drug called Rivaroxaban. Its function is to prevent clotting of blood and is prescribed in diseases where there is risk of blood clotting. If a person is on Rivoroxaban then he is at increased of bleeding due to any injury because the drug is inhibiting the clotting of the blood.Because all the procedures have a risk of injury and subsequent increased bleeding if the patient is on the drug, it is temporarily stopped. The decision on when to stop depends on the time of action of the drug in the body. Rivaroxaban is a short acting drug and its effect becomes insignificant after 24 hours.Hence as your cardiologist has advised it is usually stopped 24 hours prior to surgery. All the best for the procedure. ThankYou.
