Which Vaccination Is Better For Child - Painless DPT Or Traditional DPT?
Hi, I wanted to know which vaccine is better for child. Painless DPT or traditional DPT. I heard in traditional DPT vaccine causes fever, which is good for baby. This activates white blood cells to act. That s why instead of painless, go for traditional. Is it true?
Hi, thanks for posting your concern here. The DPT vaccine is used to prevent three communicable, and vaccine preventable diseases- Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis or Whooping cough. Traditionally and even now in developing countries whole cell pertussis vaccine (DTwP) is given. The newer acellular vaccine (DTaP) uses only some elements of the bacterium but both can prevent the disease. The advantages of newer DTaP (the so-called "painless" vaccine) are- they reduce the chance of fever and local swelling. But it is costlier. Hence, if you can afford, you can go for the newer one and regarding the protection UNICEF assures that both the variants of the vaccine can protect your baby from the diseases mentioned. Thanks and best wishes. Dr. Kaushik
