Will I Have High Risks Of Breast Cancer Considering Family History Of Cancers?
Im an 18 year old female and Both my aunt and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer a few months apart when they both were younger than 40. My aunt needed chemotherapy but my mom only needed radiation. Breast and colon cancer has been present in my family also. Do I have a high risk of getting breast cancer too?
Individuals Having 2 relatives with breast cancer are at 5 to 10 fold increase risk of Breast Cancer compared to the individuals without family history. With the addition of colon cancer history it further increases as it suggests a genetic pattern(BRCA mutations).
So, You being at a higher risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer should undergo regular Clinical breast examination as well as Self breast examinations till the age of 35 and thereafter a yearly screening mammogram. These methods will help you or your physician to pick up the disease in stages so early that only surgery and harmonal therapy will suffice.
Breast cancer is one of the few cancers which have a good prognosis even in stage III. Early breast cancer cure rates reach a value of 95 % , so do not worry.
Being informed about lifestyle changes which help in reducing breast cancer risks.
Once you have completed your family , you can discuss risk reduction surgeries with a surgical oncologist.
Further doubts kindly revert back
