Will A High Blood Sugar Level Need Hospitalization?
My husband's blood sugar level is 480 at 11:00 a.m. after a peanut butter/jelly sandwich. He is on 40 units of inuslin in the a.m. and 12 units at mealtime. Should his doctor hospitalize him to get his levels under control.. He was diagnosed Type II about 15 years ago and went on Insulin injections about 2 years ago. The past 4 weeks the levels have been consistently over 300 at the a.m. fast.
Diabetes is progressive disorder and as your husband is having T2DM since 15 years and on insulin since past 2 years, it went in coordination with natural history of most diabetic patients.
Hospitalization is not required just for fasting control of 300 mg/dl, there is requirement of increase and adjustment of dose of Insulin.
I would like to know which Insulin preparation your husband is on? according to that adjustment of dose can be advised, I would recommend a basal long acting insulin to be administered at night time along with Morning Dose of long acting insulin.
I would like to emphasize the role of Diet Control and Exercise in Glucose control in Diabetes.
I hope this helps.
