I went a and e and they said to rest it and i couldnt only in evening and the fact im in pain when i put my foot up so i cant. I even have to be careful walking because i easily go over on it and i still have to wear a support or else i cant walk. Do i need to go back to my doctor or is this normal.

Sprain (injury to ligament) can be very painful, long lasting and recurrent. Pins and needles sensation can be because of that or injury to the near by nerve.
Xrays won't help in detecting these ligament injuries . mri is the best modality and you need to visit orthopedic specialist.
