Will There Be Any Gap Between Chemotherapy And Bilateral Mastectomy?

My cousin (40yo) is going through chemo for breast cancer and wants to plan a trip at the end of the treatments which are 6 months. She will probably have a bilateral mastectomy with reconsturction at the same time. Is there a waiting period after the treatments to have the

surgery?. Thanks, Frank

Normally we allow a period of atleast 3 weeks after completion of chemotherapy before embarking upon surgery in order to allow the body to recover. This period can be extended to 4 or even 5 weeks but not later. Any further delay will lead to a decrease in the benefit attained by the chemotherapy and thus adversely affect outcome. It is better that she undergo surgery after 3 weeks of the last chemotherapy and after recovery from the surgery she plans the trip.
