X-ray Showed Mild Cardiomegaly, Aorta Unfolding. Meaning And Its Cure?
Hello Doctor, My Mother is 65 years old. An X ray of chest indicated mild cardiomegaly and unfolding of aorta noted. What does this mean and what are its consequences and treatment? She has low hemoglobin and we are consulting Hematologist who had recommended an X ray of chest, along with other blood tests. You can reply to me on YYYY@YYYY Appreciate your response. Thanks... Shirley
Cardiomegaly literally means a big heart. Mild cardiomegaly in a plain X-ray chest means the heart shadow looks a bit larger than normal. It may be due to any heart problem – like blood pressure, heart attack and so on. In this situation it can be from anaemia. Sometimes, it can even be an illusion, if he distance between the patient and X-ray machine is shorter....
Aorta is the biggest artery (blood vessel) getting out of the heart. It goes up and then arches down. When its elasticity is less – as with age, or blood pressure and so on – the arch gets a bit wider – it is called unfolding
They have no consequences by themselves
No treatment is required for it – one needs only to treat the original condition.
It is the patient as a whole, who gets treatment – not x-ray or lab finding by itself
Wish her speedy recovery
Good luck
