What Is The Cause For Intracranial Pressure Type Sensation?
Hello. Three days ago I had a bout of what I believe was food poisoning, as five others who attended the same event as me got severe nausea two days later. I recovered almost completely within 24 hours but ever since I have had a weird intracranial pressure-type sensation that turns painful when I move my head up from a lower point (stand upright after bending down, stand up from a seated position etc.)
I have been drinking LOTS water and electrolyte drinks and don't feel dehydrated. Is this a normal symptom or should I go to a doctor? I worry a bit as I did have a brain abscess from an infection many years ago and while I know I am no more likely to get a reoccurrence than anyone else, the similar pressure sensation makes me nervous! However I don't want to rush off to the doctor if it is a common part of recovery from food poisoning.
Your symptoms could be related to orthostatic hypotension, which is a common complication of dehydration during food poisoning. For this reason, I recommend monitoring your blood pressure in sitting and standing up position. In case your blood pressure values drop more than 20mm Hg during standing up position, compared to sitting position, it would indicate possible orthostatic hypotension. In such case, I would recommend taking plenty of fluids and have some rest. Increasing salt intake would also help. If these symptoms persist and your blood pressure doesn't drop during standing up position, I would recommend consulting with your neurologist and performing a brain MRI to check for intracranial hypotension.
