Neck sprain refers to ligament sprain or muscle strain in the neck. It is associated with whiplash injury. It also occurs in sports injuries. A sprain is an injury to the ligament.

 

Signs and symptoms of neck sprain

  • Pain in the back of neck which increases with movement
  • Muscle spasms and pain in the upper shoulder
  • Delayed onset of pain after 24-48 hours after neck injury. Neck-
  • Headache
  • Neck stiffness
  • Decreased neck range of motion
  • Numbness in the arm or hand

Tests and diagnosis

  • X-rays of neck
  • CT scan of the neck

Treatment of neck strain

  • Massaging the tender area
  • Ultrasound
  • Cervical traction
  • Aerobic and isometric exercise
  • Pain killers like NSAID’s like acetaminophen, ibuprofen
  • R.I.C.E therapy including rest, ice, compression and elevation.
