Are Bruises On Leg And Radiating Pain From Shin To Ankle Post Injury Normal?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Oct 2015
Question: Hello, yesterday I was walking out my front door and my ankle gave out and I hit my shin on our welcome mat. (it's pretty thick and hard). I felt instant pain and saw instant swelling and a little bruising. I walked a little (I was taking out my dogs) and the pain was so bad I cut the walk short and went back inside. I immediately wrapped my leg with an ace wrap, elevated it, iced it for 20 minutes and took an anti inflammatory and have had it elevated and compressed since and am just starting ice again. This morning I am noticing more swelling and more bruising especially in my ankle. I've noticed the pain has spread from just the middle of my shin to just above my ankle to just above my knee and on my calf in some spots. I am very much over weight and am just a smidge paranoid. I know it's most likely a very bad bruise and so far I have no symptoms that I know of to be truly worried about and should probably wait a little longer before I seek medical attention but I would love to hear your opinion. (I can walk but with a bad limp and bending my knee and ankle does cause a little discomfort)

Brief Answer:
It is all due to inflammation and will soon be over. No need to worry much!

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you to my virtual clinic HCM!
I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns today and will put my best efforts to get you out of this situation.

You have bruises on the leg and also in such a situation there happens to be a very fast over stretch on the muscles of the leg. Due to this pull-up the muscular spasm results and combined with bruises and inflammation it leads to ill feelings and pain all over to the leg areas.

But this will soon be over and with proper care you will get better soon.

Management:-
Apply Triple antibiotic cream over the bruising area to get a prophylaxis cover against probable bacterial infection.
Take Ibuprofen 600 mg three times a day and it will relieve pain and the inflammation will also go away.
Take a multivitamin daily and get the nutrients needed for the body. It is necessary for at least two weeks.
Protein diet is needed for fast muscular recovery. Salmon is the best option for you.
Apply Bengay Ultrastretch Gel on the painful areas and massage it gently.
Apply heat pad for soothing effect. It will help in the muscle ache to go away.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you in no time.
