Do Vitamin D And B 12 Help In Losing Weight?
My wife is 28 years old and she is having hypothyroidism. we are trying for a conception (1st timer). I have attached the test results. We had consulted a doc regarding this and he has suggested to take vitamin d rise 60K once a week for 12 weeks and Rejunuron 500mcg injection vitamin b12 for 5 days, 1 each week for 5 weeks and then 1 each month for 5 months. She is having them. Her height is 5.3 feet and weight as on today is 63.8KGs.She has put on weight. Additionally, she is having gluten free diet. So i have few questions regarding this.
1. why is she not losing weight inspite of taking the vitamin d and b 12 doses
2. she is also avoiding millets, spinach, peanuts along with wheat , no fast foods, and no outside food other than @home food.
3. she is mostly depending on rice and so is there any alternative for this.
4. pleaes specify a diet plan for hypothyroidsm.
5. are we taking correct medication.
6. are there any additional tests that need to be done like free t3, free t4, bile condition in liver, estrogen levels etc...for her and when does she need to take tests regulary to check thyroid?
7. what is the food that she need to consume for more absorbtion of vitamin d
8. she is taking iodine in her diet. so is there any way that she can have better absorbtion of iodine into her body. if there is any diet plan for her please specify.
what is the thyroid profile? what is thyroxine dose?
Detailed Answer:
dear XXXXXXX hi And welcome to HCM. You seem to be too anxious. first relax , things are not very bad or very serious either.
1. vit D and B12 do not help in losing weight.
2. home made food can be fattening too if over eaten
3. rice is high calories, fattening, so you have answer to your first question.
4. hypothyroid patients need to avoid high calorie food and avoid goitrogens like cabbage.
5. what thyroxine dose is she on. vitamin D and b12 are fine.
6. she needs 3 monthly TSH and FT4. and during pregnancy monthly for 9 months.
7. vitamin D absorption is not food dependent. it needs to be supplemented with calcium and vitamin C
8. iodine in salt is sufficient. our requirements are only 150 mcg /d.
I answered point wise as per your queries, but actually now I need to tell you few things.
1. if you are planning pregnancy do not get distracted with weight issues for now. vitamin D and B12 are nutitional deficiencies, they do need to be replaced but they will not help in weight loss rather they may add to some weight.
2. weight loss program requires vigorous exercise. She is overweight by 6-8 kg so she needs to cut down calorie intake and start exercisisng. but for now if the focus is on pregnancy, just ask her to be on healthy diet and regular walk.
3. fresh Thyroid profile with thyroid dose is what is required.
regards!
She is not having any thyroxine dose.Doc told us that we can reverse and reduce TSH levels once these defeciences are corrected.
However, After going through the process i didnt feel that this may be helpful. As per the test results would like to suggest thyroxine. (i mean the dosage)? That would be of great help.
I went through many websites and videos. they say avoid millets ( as they interfere wtih the thyroid hormone production) and gluten food (as the molecules resemble the thyroid gland which are being killed by the immune system). so she is left out with rice and so she is right now on a diet where she eats rice twice a day and breakfast.
Now what we eat here are rotis made of either wheat or millets if we remove them from food we are left out wtih rice.i am bit confused. so i am not able to understand what exactly she need to eat in order to recover.
I also came to know that the TSH levels should be below 1.5 for the first timers. so she is now at 5 so i need to know what are the diet changes she need to make along with the medication that u are going to prescribe.
This will be of great help for us.
We are trying for conception for more than 10 months now. my age is 33 and her is 28.so it will be of great help if u put us in a right direction where we can resolve this issue.
Thank you Doctor
Tab. Thyroxine 75 mcg /day
Detailed Answer:
Dear Mr. XXXXXXX Hi! first of all sorry for the delay. I was running a little busy.
Now as of your wife's thyroid status, her profile is actually not bad, it is borderline but due to your planning for baby, she needs to maintain TSH between 1 and 2. So she must be on treatment. As her weight is 68 kg, she may start with 75 mcg, early morning , empty stomach, and avoid eating any thing over the tab for another 30 -45 minute.
Weight loss is the primary requirement but for now let her focus on conception.
Certain food products are goitrogenic, but goitre is not her problem, so ask her to be on a normal diet that may help her to lose weight. Avoid rice , as rice will make her gain weight.
regards!
two indepedent problems.
Detailed Answer:
Dear mr. XXXXXXX Hi!
fibroadenoma is a different entity and not related to thyroid disorder. I have nothing much to suggest in reference to it. You need to make her undergo annual check up. mammography and FNAC.
thyroid as i told you earlier, is not going to affect fibroadenoma.
regards!
