Does The Use Of Gabapentin Causes Nosebleeds?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Mar 2017
Question: Hello, my question is why gabapentin causes nosebleeds? After being diagnosed, with shingles, I was prescribed this medication (age 60). As a result, I stopped!

Should this be a side effect that is listed? I want this to be private!

Brief Answer:
Gabapentin causing nosebleeds is so unusual!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have reviewed your information fully. However, gabapentin is not known to cause nosebleeds. Bleeding disorders are very very rare in patients taking gabapentin. Am a bit skeptical admitting that there could be a causal relationship between gabapentin and nosebleeds. However, if your symptoms started after taking gabapentin and disappeared upon stopping, then that is a clear way to establish it. For this reason, I will suggest that you describe the timeline of these nosebleeds in relation to starting and stopping Gabapentin. This way, I will review and make sure that there it sounds plausible and justifies you going off.

I hope to hear back from you. I wish you well and hope to make a definitive statement when I get a timeline form you about this nosebleed and use of gabapentin.

I have never had nosebleeds. I took this med 3x a day. I had taken the medication at least 3weeks. Then, the incident started occurring (morning/ evening. The nosebleeds have stopped. I read about garbapentin 300mg/ nosebleeds on the health web page online.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
While nosebleeds are possible while on Gabapentin, this is very rare!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You are right about suspecting gabapentin as a possible cause of your nose bleeds. While it is possible, it occurs rarely and that is why I will settle on this only when no other cause has been identified.

Have you stopped the medication entirely at this time? Did you do any test to see how well your blood is clotting?

I may tend to say, give it a try again and let's see if this recurs. If it does, then for sure you should never go back on it.

I wish you well and look forward hearing back from you!
