Is The Actalin OTC Thyroid Support Effective In Treatment Of Low Thyroid Levels?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 May 2015
Question: Hi … I'll re-type my earlier question. Dx'd with low thyroid in teens, medicated on and off until age 40 and have been taking Synthroid qd since. I'm now 66. Neurologist at Case in XXXXXXX just dx'd me with "mild cognitive impairment" then early onset Alzheimers a few months after. Unfortunately my Synthroid was often substituted with levothyroxine despite doctors' scripts.
Question: Do you agree with another colleague here that Actalin OTC thyroid support is pretty much a waste of money, effort and hope? Thanks for your help. XXXXXXX W.

Brief Answer:
Thyroid

Detailed Answer:
I follow your question.

The recommended treatment for the treatment of hypothyroidism ('low or under-active thyroid') is levo thyroxine. I understand your point about preferring to stay on one brand such as synthroid.

So Actalin is not recommended for the treatment of your thyroid condition. To the best of my knowledge of published medical literature in the thyroid context, I am not aware of any evidence that Actalin is safe and effective for the treatment of an underactive thyroid.

Thank you for your input, Dr. Topiwala. I'll cancel my order for the supplement. I am confused about one thing, though. My neurologist insists that I NOT take generic levothyroxine but stick to the Synthoid. Is there really any treatment-based evidence that the levothyroxine differs from Synthroid and can under-serve the patient's wellness?

Detailed Answer:
Thyroid experts worldwide typically recommend adhering to one brand of levo thyroxine. Synthroid is certainly one such brand name medication.
It is important to receive consistent batch-to-batch active medicinal ingredient. Brand name medications are expected to maintain this standard.
With generic levo thyroxine, this cannot always be guaranteed, as it can come from different manufacturers, as opposed to being manufactured by the same uniform production method.
