As per your requirements, I presume that you do not wish to use any of the medications, barrier methods or intrauterine devices available for contraception. Then, the available method left is to use the safe period strictly.

To calculate the safe period, you should first chart out the menstrual calender of your wife. In any normal menstrual cycle, whatever be the length of the cycle, ovulation occurs two weeks prior to the onset of the next period. Ovulation can also be detected using the ovulation kits, basal body temperature chart and cervical mucus test. Therefore, the period around two weeks prior to the date of onset of the next menstruation is the fertile period with the highest chances of conception.

Sperms can live up to a maximum of seven days in the female genital tract while the ovum is short lived, with a life of only 24 hours. Taking this into consideration, fertile period is calculated to be from one week prior to ovulation to a couple of days after the time of ovulation, about ten days in all. If you can totally avoid intercourse during these days, your chances of pregnancy are very less.

Please let me tell you, this is not the best method of contraception. Chances of failure are more if you do not strictly follow the rules. Barrier methods offer safety and if practised carefully ensure less failure rate also.

Since you did not want any of the available methods, I suggested safe period. Your wife can get an intrauterine device inserted after a proper evaluation by a gynecologist, though I do not suggest this method for those women who never conceived before. I would prefer low dose combination pills for a maximum of 2-3 years or until such time needed, whichever is earlier.

You have better choices than Copper-T and you can get a clear picture once you see a specialist. Mirena and Multiload have good figures. Yet, any device needs the same precautions like periodic checkup, reporting any symptoms like pain, abnormal bleeding or discharge etc., as there is a chance of the device getting displaced, though rare.
