Question: Hi dr,

I am currently recovering from a cold and I am the fifth day in and I have developed in the last two days a very dry and scratchy throat where I am coughing a lot but nothing coming out. It seems very irritable at the back of my throat and even throat lozenges don't reduce the coughing ans irratation much. Could I have possibly developed something like Strep throat from the cold or is this a normal symptom? I did initially have a sore throat but it went away in a day and now I have developed this instead. I seem to be getting better expect for my throat which is worse at night do you think its worth gettig examined by a doctor ot would it be too early?

Kind Regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Probably viral infection, most likely no strep throat

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

from your description it is more likely a cough due to a virus cold, and not strep throat. This is quite typical after day 5. Usually it will recover within a few more days. Try sage tea and keep taking over the counter cough drops (there is may available, often there is thyme or similar tincture in it), that will give you relief. If it doesn't improve within 2 more days a doctor should listen to your lungs to be on the safe side.

Hope you get better soon, best regards

Thanks for that I am kind of suspecting it may be allergies though it just feels like my throat is irritated when I breath in. Would it be advisable to try an antihistamine? I tried throat lozenges and cough medicine which didnt really help that much.

Brief Answer:
Allergy possible, antihistaminics ok to try

Detailed Answer:
Dearr patient,

yes an allergic reaction is possible. Antihistaminics are ok to try. If the cough comes from allergic asthma, you would need a mild cortisone spray (perscription). Best regards
