Suggest Treatment For Severe Asthma
Question: My Girlfriend has severe Asthma and has been taking prednisone for many years, her skin is like paper and I think her body is breaking down from all the steroids (inhalers and breathing machine). I have done some web based research and it seems diet (specifically milk) can cause the inflammation for an asthma attack. I have suggested she modify her diet but she will not follow any of my advice. Is there any way her attacks could be eliminated with a better diet? If so, how can I convince her? She also has some mental health issues (which she takes medication for) that I think are exacerbated by the steroids. Her legs also have water collecting and sores that won't heal and back problems (vertebrae that are damaged in two different areas). Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, steroid when absorbed systemically can affect the mental health and reduce the immunity resulting in delayed wound healing. But here the steroid are given by inhalation route, so there is very little systemic absorption, so it is less likely to affect her adversely.
Different individuals have different triggering factors for producing asthmatic attack. It is difficult to pinpoint.
As you have mentioned about the food and also you have mentioned it is difficult to convince her about it. I would suggest you to keep a track of food she eats and when the attack occurs. It will be better if you can maintain a food diary, by doing so you can link the attack with the food and also showing this you can try to convince her.
