Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea And Vomiting
Question: my mom has severe diarrhea and throwing up. we realize it a virus but is there something that will ease either? she won't eat or drink. thx
Brief Answer:
It's important to keep her well hydrated...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am sorry for the situation your mom is in.
As she is having diarrhea and vomiting, it might be due to virus. The most important thing is to keep her hydrated. I advise to:
- let her drink a lot of water or any juice she likes more
- ORS to replace the lost electrolytes
- take tasectan or pepto bismol and probiotics for diarrhea
- have light meals: yogurt, chicken soups, toast, apple sauce, etc.
If her health condition will worsen or no improvement, then, should run to the nearest clinic as she might need intravenous fluid replacement.
Wish fast recovery! Let me know if I can be of further help!

thank you so much, so no Imodium? just pepto?
Brief Answer:
No need for immodium, pepto will help instead...
Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
I usually do not prescribe Imodium as I want to prevent the most severe complication which is ileus if Imodium is used.
The idea is to help her bowels get back to normal function, thus, no more diarrhea. Metronidazole is the next step of treatment, but let her stabilize first after this flare up.
Wish fast recovery!
