What To Do If Having Great Pain And Unable To Pass Gas After NG Tube Was Placed And Surgery Performed For Ileus?
My daughter had a lap appy yesterday after the CT scan found her appendix ruptured. The CT showed severe ileus. An NG tube was placed to low intermittent suction prior to surgery. It has been greater than 24 hours since the NG tube was placed and surgery performed, and she is still in great pain and not passing gas. She needs help. Please advise me, thank you.
* As per my surgical experience, the postoperative recovery of the lap appendicectomy in a patient with perforated appendix takes time for bowel sounds to appear (which varies as per the underlying infection and bowel status).
* The examining surgeon is best to judge to evaluate the bowel sounds and guide precisely in the same direction.
* However, if the pain is substantial, the discussion with the treating surgeon is recommended to modify the analgesic dosage or help from interventional pain management specialist with an epidural catheter is the best choice as well.
* Wish her best recovery and have the patience for some time.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
