What Causes Lack Of Bowel Movements And Shivering After Knee Replacement?
i recently out of hospital-had total knee replacement. that went well but developed a problrm with my bowels. They went to sleep. no movement for 5 days and terrible pain, They are working now with a lot of help from bowel softners, the name they gave me eas Ileus. Not sure what that is but a also started getting these shakes and supper cold and shivvers, I am still getting them what is causing this? I do have low iron and hemoglobin
It is a great news that the total knee replacement went on well. Ileus means the the movement of the intestines comes to halt thereby there is no forward movement of stool causing constipation and related symptoms. As such there is not much to worry as the painkillers can cause constipation and stoppage or getting to lower dosages can help recover.
It may be necessary to take an enema in some cases as impacted fecoliths can also cause similar symptoms. Since laxatives are helping you I hope to have a relief of this problem. But the shivering and cold can be a cause of concern as this may indicate an infection somewhere in body which needs to be watched and examined for.
This can be due to infection at operation site, UTI or so on. Please consult your Orthopedic Surgeon asap or at ER as the system may be in your country. And get complete investigations of blood, urine and stool to get the cause and get treated accordingly. You may need a change over to another antibiotic, symptomatic and supportive management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
