Suggest Treatment For Swelling On The Side Of The Tongue

Question: I was wondering what could cause swollen foliate papillae on one side of the tongue? I felt a slight sting, noticed inflammation with mild pain. By the next day no pain at all. But it's been just over 3 weeks and it is still larger than normal. I have no other symptoms.

As per your complain it seems that in case if you have slightly enlarged papillae which began with slight sting and inflammation then it can be most probably due to irritation of that portion of the tongue that can occur due to irritation of tongue by any sharp edges of teeth or tongue biting habits..

You should get it checked out by a Dentist..

As of now you can do warm saline gargle, take Vitamin B complex supplements and do cool compresses over it..
Avoid very hot and spicy foods..

In case if it does not get better consult an Oral Surgeon and get a biopsy done..

As of now it does not seems to be anything serious so don't worry about it..

I understand that there is lingual tonsil tissue that occupies the same area as the foliate papillae. What would cause the lingual tonsils to become hyperplastic and to form protrusions in this area? It's like the tissue is swollen, but there was zero pain after initial inflammation.

Yes, Lingual tonsil is present in that location and can get hypertrophied..
But a clinical examination is must for ruling out exactly the cause of it and can be treated accordingly..
