Question: I'm not understanding my parents, are they responsible for my own issues too?

My father is a transvestite and did something when I was young - he conducted his desire in public, the next door neighbor. He did this when I was a child and the neighbors reported his behavior to police, it meant we had to move house.

My father doesn't seem to like to hear about anyone who is doing something better than him. I was looking at people locally who own a business and to him they're "idiots" etc.

My mother had OCD, but her manipulation is very clear when in an argument. She hates everyone and they make her feel sick. The entire family, me at times, and others are all at fault but never her.

Then my father always agreed with her, and when I was young, my mom was always right. Never me. I was to blame always. Same now in arguments. She has been irrational, but it's everyone else at fault.

I feel as though I was abused when younger, mentally, and sexually. I don't remember anything sexual, but don't like it when my dad stands close to me.

What's this all about? I have lack of motivation myself and struggling with my business to develop. Also, not able to form relationships too. Please discuss.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

It sounds like your upbringing clearly had a profound affect on how you view yourself and how you feel. This type of issue is best addressed in psychodynamic psychotherapy. This is where you talk about your feelings and concerns with a therapist who helps you understand and work through these issues better. I encourage you to reach out to a therapist or psychiatrist for once a week therapy sessions.

Detailed Answer:
It strikes me that they certainly have their own issues which are also having an effect on you. Often there is nothing we can do to change others' behavior, so your parents will have to deal with these issues on their own -- but you can seek therapy to help yourself better handle your parents when they begin to affect you.
