What Causes Active Bleeding And Nose Bleeds While On Plavix?

Question: I have been taking Plavix for about 5 years. I had a CVA. Recently I have been having problems with bleeding. Often It starts spontaneously. I have been in the ER 2times in the last six months. In the last two weeks I have had more nosebleeds. My doctor encouraged me to keep taking the Plavix. Should I explore a second opinion for new med that might not have this side Effect?

I appreciate your concern

In case of active bleeding from the nose, i would advise for stopping the plavix for now. An ENT specialist should be consulted to look for a local cause. Local medication and cauterization of bleeder inside the nose can be opted for. Plavix contains clopidogrel. The alternative is aspirin or dipyridamole. Both these medication have the same side effect as they are anti platelets. When the bleeding stops the plavix can be restarted. If the bleeding is sporadic then plavix can be used on every alternate day after due consultation with your doctor.
