What Causes Blood In Urine Post A Hysterectomy In An Elderly Person?

Question: It appears that I have blood in my urine. I'm 64 & had a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy in 1995 at age 43 with diagnosis of endometrial cancer. Recently, I've had a cold which I've treated with various OTC meds--all containing acetaminophen--but I've been very careful not to take too much. Last night, at 10 PM I took a 12-hour dose of Mucinex-DM with (at least) a full glass of water and no other medication. Before that I'd been taking both Nyquil and Dayquil, but NEVER the full recommended dose in any day. This morning I woke up with pain in my right side above the waist and in my lower back and took a full 8-hour dose of arthritis strength acetaminophen which took care of the pain. It was awhile after the acetaminophen that I first noticed the blood, but I'm not sure how long. I haven't had any fever for several days from the cold. I don't drink or smoke.

Hi there, Dr. Purushottm Neurgaonkar welcomes you to HCM VIRTUAL CLINIC. I have gone through your question , and I think I have understood your concern. I will suggest you the best possible treatment options.

1 ) First of all do not panic.

2 ) As you have mentioned that you have taken adequate dose of analgesic to control your pain and thereafter you have noticed blood through urine, I would like to know about a few things.

Are you getting fever with chills?
Is there history of urinary tract calculus in the past?
Have you done USG in the recent past
?

3 ) please do keep drinking plenty of water in the day.
Please get USG and urine routine examination done.

Is "USG" urine specific gravity? I don't recall that I've ever had one, and no history of UT calculus. I normally have small flashes of fever--idiopathic periodic fever--but I'm not noticing any chills.

Brief Answer:
USG- ultrasonography. Phyto-estrogens wil be of help.

Detailed Answer:
hi there,
sorry for the delay, due to some hectic surgical schedule.

USG - meaning ultra sono graphy.

Also, your hot flashes can be due to menopausal symptoms.
I will suggest you the following-
Please have mild to moderate exercise every day. 10 to 30 minutes walk , if possible.
Meditate. Learn and practice deep breathing.
Use of phyto-estrogens is advisable, of course after consulting with your treating doctor.

I hope this answer helps you.
Thanks.
