What Causes Blue Coloration Of Right Foot While Sitting For Some Time?
Question: Hi Doctor:
I discussed my previous concern with one of your doctors who was very helpful. My right foot turns cold and blue when sitting at times. I have foot drop from a craniotomy 20 years ago, I went to the Cardiologist and had a PAD testing done. They found some what they called a few slight abnormalities. I am concerned. What could this mean. I do have pvcs. Please advise. Thank you.

I would consider the following possibilities
1. Vascular problem
2. Complex regional pain syndrome
The symptoms of CRPS vary in their severity and length.
1. One symptom of CRPS is continuous, intense pain that gets worse rather than better over time. If CRPS occurs after an injury, it may seem out of proportion to the severity of the injury. Even in cases involving an injury only to a finger or toe, pain can spread to include the entire arm or leg. In some cases, pain can even travel to the opposite extremity. Other symptoms of CRPS include:
2. "Burning" pain
3.Swelling and stiffness in affected joints
4. Motor disability, with decreased ability to move the affected body part
5Changes in nail and hair growth patterns: There may be rapid hair growth or no hair growth.
6. Skin changes: CRPS can involve changes in skin temperature -- skin on one extremity can feel warmer or cooler compared to the opposite extremity. Skin color may become blotchy, pale, purple or red. The texture of skin also can change, becoming shiny and thin. People with CRPS may have skin that sometimes is excessively sweaty.
The possibility of CRPS is more likely if vascular problem has been ruled out by Color doppler examination.

Thank you for your response. I went to see the Cardiologist just today and discussed the results of the PAD testing. Results indicated significant negative pressure gradient between the distal right thigh and right calf suspicious for distal SFA/popliteal disease Not sure what this means? MD spoke so fast. Please advise thank you for your help.

The result indicate blockage in the artery supplying the lower limb. The artery of the thigh is known as Femoral artery, it continues near the knee as popliteal artery. The blockage is at this level.
Based on your age the commonest cause is atherosclerosis. It occurs due to blockage of blood vessel by fatty plaque.
You will require further investigation which will include
1 Serum Lipid profile
2. 2D Echocardiography
3. Serum Electrolyes
4. Coagulation profile
I would suggest you to discuss it with your Physician

Thank you for your response. I will go for the lab work. One more question is why does my right foot turn cold and bottom of toes turn blue at times. When I elevated the foot color turns back to normal. Is this related to PAD or is the PAD an incidental finding. Could this just be Rayauds?
